The Travelers Protective Association Hosts National Training Session

St. Louis-based organization welcomes staff from 19 states

The Travelers Protective Association (TPA), a fraternal benefit society, recently held a training program for division secretaries from 19 different states.  The training was conducted by Operations Manager Douglas Johnson, Chief Administrative Officer Albert M. Shoemaker, Jr., and key staff from the national headquarters.

Division secretaries work with the presidents in planning and running the state’s TPA division.  The recent training focused on various programs including membership incentive and supplemental income, as well as how to handle online payments and division reporting.

Founded in 1890, TPA’s national headquarters is located at 2041 Exchange Dr. in St. Charles, Mo.  TPA offers fraternalism to its members, as well as participates in safety projects and community service.  The Association provides accident, disability and death benefits to both its members and their beneficiaries.  The Association is licensed in 29 states.

Established in 1975, the organization’s Scholarship Trust for the Hearing Impaired provides financial aid to those who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Grants are used for mechanical devices, medical and specialized treatment, and education that includes speech classes and interpreters.  To date the trust has distributed over $2 million to approximately 5,200 recipients.

“The training was very successful in terms of communication with the national board of directors and idea sharing among our division secretaries,” said TPA’s Chief Administrative Office Albert M. Shoemaker, Jr.  “We look forward to seeing what everyone achieves in the upcoming year based on what everyone learned.”

Ron Bedard, President of the State Executive Advisory Team, said “It was the most educational training we’ve had.  It was ‘Team TPA’ working and learning together.”

TPA established the Homer T. Wilson Fund, which provides emergency financial aid and is designated for indigent members, widows, widowers and orphans.  The Association is also involved with Children Have An iDentity (CHAD), a local and national level safety sticker program.
